Cyril SELMES was born in Camberwell/Bermondsey, Surrey (Depending
on the Document) in 1896, son of Sydney George Selmes a Bus Conductor and
Louisa Selmes (nee Jones). One of their four children.
His parents were married in mid-1893, in Camberwell, Surrey.
He was Baptised Cyril Sydney Lewis George Selmes on 23rd
May 1897 at the Church of Saint John the Devine, Kennington, London.
1901 Census records Cyril aged 4, living with his parents,
sister Elvira (7) and brother Leonard (7 months) at Guinness Trust Buildings,
269 Page Walk, Bermondsey, Surrey. The family had a boarder Edward G. Bond aged
9. The Census records the family SLEMES.
1911 Census, Cyril aged 14, has left school and is employed
as a Tailor, living with his parents, sisters Elvira (16), Dorothy (6), and
brother Leonard (10), at 14 Rutland Road, Twickenham, Middx. Edward G. Bond
(18) is now recorded as Adopted and employed as an Errand Boy.
Wartime Service
Cyril enlisted in Richmond, Middx, (SDITGW state
“Formerly 4446 Middlesex Regiment”, no documents were found to confirm
this) posted to the 11th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City of
London Regiment) and issued with the service No. 7419. On completion of his
training he was sent to the Western Front, he disembarked at Boulogne, France,
on 26th July 1915, and based in the Flesselles area of France. Cyril
was Killed in Action less than three months later, 8th October 1915,
aged 19, he is buried in Point 110 Old Military Cemetery, Fricourt, France.

Additional Information
His mother Louisa received a dependents pension of 5/- a
week from 5th December 1916 and his effects of £3-14s-09d, pay owing
and his war gratuity of £4.
His Headstone inscription “THY MEMORY TREASURED IS BY ONE
AND ALL SLEEP ON DEAR ONE TILL THE LAST ROLL CALL” was requested by Mr. S.
Selmes, High Street, Barley, Herts.
The family later moved to 12 Council Houses, Barley,
Hertfordshire. The 1921 Census has the family living at The Fox & Hounds,
High Street, Barley, Herts.
His brother Leonard Selmes enlisted, aged 18, in the Royal
Air Force in August 1918, and adopted brother Edward. G. Bond, served in the
Middlesex Regiment, both survived the Great War.
