Pre War
Ernest (Ernie) Carpenter was born in 1899 in Rickling Green, Essex, the son of Henry and Mary Jane Carpenter. He also had an older sister Minnie.
On the 1901 Census the family were living at Brooklands Lodge, Birchanger, Essex where his father was working as a gardener domestic. By 1911 they had moved to Berkhamsted, Herts (where his mother had been born) and were living at 41 High Street, Berkhamsted. His father was then a jobbing gardener and Ernest a 14 year old schoolboy. His sister Minnie died in 1913, aged 16.
Ernest was living in Berkhamsted and working as an apprentice printer at time of enlistment.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Watford, Herts on 23 September 1916 and was posted to the 28th Training Reserve Battalion, reg. no. 14740. He was mobilised on 20 February 1917
Ernest died on 21 April 1917 at Fort Pitt Military Hospital, Chatham, Kent from cerebro-spinal meningitis and is buried in Fort Pitt Military Cemetery, Chatham.
Additional Information
A war gratuity was not admissible but his father received pay owing of £3 4s 10d. His mother received a pension of 3s 6d a week
