Pre War
Born in Bushey on 1 September 1885, John Herbert Carey was the son of John Herbert Carey and Henrietta Louisa Bennett. His father was a lodging house keeper and John grew up in Leighton Buzzard, where he was employed as a cycle maker.
Recorded in some records as born in Watford and enlisting in Leighton Buzzard, Beds.
Wartime Service
In 1914 he enlisted in Leighton Buzzard with the Bedfordshire Regiment and served with the 1st battalion in France. He later transferred to the, 1st/4th Battalion of the Norfolk Regiment and as Sergeant 201257 served in the Egyptian theatre of war. He died on 19 April 1917, aged 32, and is remembered with honour at the Gaza War Cemetery in Israel.
His pension record states “died in action” and shows the dependant as his mother H L Carey living at 38, St Andrews Street, Leighton Buzzard. (Note: In his pension record in Ancestry Fold 3 his full name has been mis-transcribed as Carey, John Albert).
