Edward Hildred Hanbury Carlile was born in Meltham, Yorkshire, on 28th January 1881, son of Edward Hildred Carlile (B 1853 in Brixton, Surrey) and Isabella Carlile (nee Hanbury) (B 1856 in Stock Newington). One of five children and the only son. He was Baptised on 13th March 1881, in the Parish of Meltham Hill, Yorkshire.

The 1881 Census lists Edward H.H. Carlile, age 2mths, with his father, Edward Hildred Carlile, a cotton thread manufacture, and mother visiting an Elizabeth Hanbury in Wellington.

In 1891 Census records Edward aged 10, at school, living with his parents, sisters, Dora 12, Beatrice 8, Janet 6 and Eleanor 5, at Helm Hall, Helme, Meltham, Yorks.

Edward was educated at Harrow school and Trinity Collage, Cambridge.

Although not found in 1901, the 1911 Census record Edwards family living at Ponsbourne Park, near Hertford, Newgate Street, Herts, and his father was the Member Of Parliament for St Albans. Edward was not living with the family.

On 8th august 1917, Edward married Ruth Millicent Dawson, the daughter of William Henry Dawson (who was in the military) in All Souls Church, Langham Place, St. Marylebone, London.

Wartime Service

Edward enlisted in September 1914, joining the Hertfordshire Yeomanry.


The London Gazette, 4th January 1918 recorded: "Capt. E. H. H. Carlile to be acting Major, whilst employed. on the Headquarters. of a Yeomanry Cyclists Regiment. 17th-Dec. 1917. Captain Carlile served in the Hertfordshire Yeomanry in England until posted to the front. He landed in France on the 19th January 1918 and joined the battalion on the front lines the following day. Two months later he was posted as missing during the opening phase of the German offensive near Peronne, and was later confirmed as having been killed on the 22nd March."


He was the only son of Colonel, Sir Hildred Carlile, 1st Bart., C.B.E. and the late Lady Carlisle, of Ponsbourne Park near Hertford and the husband of Ruth M. Carlile (later Mrs. Preston). He has no known grave but is remembered on the Arras memorial to the missing, on the Hertfordshire Yeomanry panel.

Additional Information

Listed as Captain on the Hertfordshire Memorial and sometimes as Carlisle. The value of his effects were £208-5s-0d, the recipient was not given.


Edward is also commemorated on his family’s grave in Ponsbourne (Or Newgate Street) (St. Mary) Churchyard. His part of the inscription reads:

IN EVER LOVING MEMORY OF

BORN JANUARY 28TH 1881 KILLED IN ACTION MARCH 22ND 1918 NEAR VILLERS FOUCON FRANCE.
THE DEAR HUSBAND OF RUTH MILLICENT CARLILE AND THE ONLY SON OF SIR EDWARD HILDRED CARLILE BARONET OF PONSBOURNE, C.B.E. AND ISABELLA HIS WIFE.
