Pre War
Stephen Draper was born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, on 8th February 1884, son of William Draper a, Coachman and Maria Draper (nee Taylor).
1891 Census; Stephen is aged 7, living with his parents’ sister Amelia (13) and brother George (11) at, 6 Wellington Road, Enfield, Middx.
1901 Census Stephen (17) is working as a General Labourer living with his parents and sister Amelia in, Brookfield lane, Cheshunt, Herts.
His mother Maria Draper died in 1902 aged 50.
1911 Census; Stephen (26) is single, living alone at 3 Braemor Cottages, Cadmore lane, Cheshunt, Herts, and working as a Nursery Hand “Roses”.
Stephen married Mary Louisa Wyatt of Cholsey, Berkshire the daughter of Mark and Louisa Wyatt, at St Mary’s Church, Cholsey, Berks on 8th April 1912, they had one son Mark William Draper born on 27th June 1913. They lived in, Elizabeth Cottages, Cholsey, Berks.
Wartime Service
Stephen enlisted in Princess Charlotte of Wales (Royal Berkshire Regiment) at their HQ in Reading, Berks, with the service number 15824, he arrived in France on 1st April 1915, for service on the Western front.
He was killed in action five months later on 28th September 1915, he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial in France to the missing.
Additional Information
Mary received a widow’s pension of 15/- a week for herself and son Mark, his Pay Owing of £1-14s-11d, and his War Gratuity of £3.
