Pre War

He was born 22nd October 1875 in Bracebridge, Lincolnshire, one of 5 children of James, a blacksmith and Maria. 22nd November 1892, he enlisted into The Royal Marines and served with them for a total of 22 years, 17 of these at sea, reaching the rank of Sergeant. In 1901, he was serving on H.M.S. Ophir, at that time the Royal Yacht, when the future King George V and Queen Mary undertook a voyage around The British Empire. By 1911 his parents had moved to South Mimms, where his father was now a head porter at a hospital and in the middle part 1911 James married Priscilla in Barnet, who at the time of his death, was living at 21, Landseer Buildings, Millbank, London.

Wartime Service

It is probable that he went to Ostend, Belgium September/October 1914 and took part in the defence of Antwerp, returned to England later and in 1915 went to Gallipoli and was killed in action.
