Pre War
Hubert George was born in 1889 in Ivinghoe to George Scrivener, a coachman, and Kate (nee Chennels). On the 1891 Census George, Kate and family of Caroline, Arthur, Hubert, Ethel and Ernest were living with William Chennels at St. Margarets Lane, Ivinghoe. On the 1901 Census the family were living at Summerfield House Stables, Elstree and Hubert was employed as a garden boy. On the 1911 Census the family had moved to Elmdale, Elstree and Arthur was a gardener.
Wartime Service
Hubert enlisted as Gunner 16903 in the Royal Field Artillery. He was deployed to B Battery L (50) Brigade attached as Divisional Artillery to 9th (Scottish) Division. Hubert crossed to France on 10 May 1915 with this Division. The 9th Division with its Artillery were take part in the Battle of Loos in Sep 1915 before being transferred to the Somme Area for the opening of the Offensive on 1 Jul 1916. Hubert was killed action on 21 May 1916 (this may have been the result of counter-battery fire by the German Artillery). He had at some time been promoted to Bombardier.

Additional Information
War gratuity of £7 10s and arrears of £26 1s 4d together with Probate of £170 2s 6d was paid to his father. His brother Arthur served in the Gloucestershire Regiment and was killed in action at Hazebrouck, Ypres on 14 Apr 1918.
