Pre War

Arthur Frederick Scripps was born in Barley, Hertfordshire, on 7th May 1888, son of David Scripps an Agricultural worker, and Eliza Scripps (nee Dale). The youngest of their twelve children.


His parents were married on 25th April 1863, in Barkway, Herts.


He was baptised Arthur Frederick Scripps on 22nd July 1888, in the Parish of Barley, Herts.


1891 Census records Arthur aged 2, living with his parents, four brothers and two sisters Eliza (13) and Ada (9) at Smiths End, Barley, Herts.


1901 Census, Arthur aged 13, has left school and is working as a Farm Labourer, living with his parents, and brother George (21) at Putty Hall, Barley, Herts.


Arthur married Cicely Lilla Rumbold the daughter of Arthur and Constance Rumbold of Hinxworth, Herts, in the early part of 1910, they went on to have a daughter Kathleen Margaret Scripps born in 1914.


1911 Census records Arthur (22) married to Cicely (24), they are living at Church End, Barley, Herts.

Wartime Service

Arthur enlisted at Royston, Herts, posted to the Grenadier Guards and issued with the service No. 12576, on completion of his training he was sent to France, arriving on 26th July 1915.


Arthur died on 3rd November 1918, aged 30, at either, the 29th or 46th Casualty Clearing Stations, which were located at Delsaux Farm, near Beugny in France. He is buried in Delsaux Farm Cemetery, Beugny, France. Grave Ref; II. F. 15.

Additional Information

A Pension Card exists for his widow Cicely as a dependent, but no pension amount is recorded.


The Barley War Memorial records the date of his death as 2nd November 1918, all other records give the 3rd November 1918.


His elder brother Private 19839 John Scripps of the 10th Battalion, Hampshire Regiment, was Killed in Action on 6th September 1918, he is buried in Karasouli Military Cemetery, Greece.


Cicely remarried in 1924, in Royston, Herts, to Walter Douglas Gouldthorp, they went on to have a son Walter John Gouldthorp born November 1924.


Private 326894 Walter Douglas Gouldthorp, served with the 1st Battalion, Cambridgeshire Regiment in the Great War.
