Alan was born in what was India at Gilgit (now in Pakistan). His father was at the time a Capt in the 26th Carnatic Infantry Regt. Indian Army.
On enlistment in Kelowna he described himself as a rancher.
Wartime Service
Enlisted 29 Sep 1915. He was assigned to Canadian Reserve Cyclist Company before being further assigned to 5th Div Cyclists. He embarked at Halifax on 21st Apr 1916 destined for Liverpool where he arrived 6th May 1916.
While in England he was in hospital at Chiseldon, Wilts for appendicitis and also a cyst on the neck. In Jan 1918 in spent time in Netley Hospital being treated for Impetigo on the face.Previously reported wounded and missing, now for official purposes presumed to have died.
During an attack in the vicinity of Vis-en-Artois, he was employed as a machine gunner and about 10 minutes after leaving the ‘jumping of ‘ trench, he was severely wounded I the stomach by enemy machine gun fire. He was last seen by a comrade who removed the machine gun equipment he was carrying and placed his rifle in an upright position to attract the attention of stretcher bearers. Since that time no further information has been received concerning him.
