Pre War
William Camp was born in 1892 in Aspenden, nr Buntingford, Hertfordshire, the son of James and Elizabeth Camp, and one of five children.
His father died on 24 October 1896 and on the 1901 Census he was living in London Road, Aspenden, with his widowed mother, sister Alice and brother Frederick. His mother's occupation was recorded as lodging house keeper and there were two boarders and one visitor listed with the family. By 1911 William and his brother Frederick were living at Manor Cottage, Aspenden, with their mother and William was working as a gardener (domestic)
He married Edith Ruth Richardson in 1915. On CWGC records her address was recorded as The Post Office, Puckeridge, Ware, Herts. She later lived at Vine Villa, Hitchin, Herts in 1939 and died in Ashwell in 1978.
His mother's address on pension records is Manor Cottage, Aspenden, Buntingford, Herts.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Bedford and initially served with the Nottinghamshire and Derby Regiment under Reg. No. 5360, later transferring to the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, 1st/6th Battalion.
William was killed in action on 4 February 1917, aged 24, and is buried in Assevillers New British Cemetery, France.
Additional Information
His widow received a war gratuity of £3 and two separate payments of pay owing totalling of £2 16s 4d. On pension cards, both his widow and mother are listed as dependants.
His mother was awarded a pension of 4s 2d a week and although William and his wife do not appear to have had any children, his widow was awarded a pension of 13s 9d a week. There is also a note that a grant was made of 12s 6d a week for a six month course of training with the sub-postmistress of Broxbourne, Herts. (note Edith's address in Pre War information above.)
