William was born on 13 Oct 1889 (baptised 24 Nov 1889) in Little Amwell to William George Camp, a labourer, and Mary Ann (nee Edwards). William was living with his parents and elder sisters Harriet, Mary and Elizabeth at Vicarage Cottages, Little Amwell on the 1891 Census.


On the 1901 Census the family now consisting of parents, William and younger brothers Walter (born 1892) and Jack (born 1897) were living at 3, London Road, Little Amwell. On the 1911 Census Harriet had returned to the family, both William and Walter were working as labourers and Jack was at school. 

Wartime Service

William enlisted as Private 14733 in the Bedfordshire Regiment, probably soon after the Great War was declared (no service records are available for William).

William married Aimee Eliza Payne on 22 May 1915 in Great Amwell. At some time William was promoted to Lance Corporal. William went to France on 26 July 1915 with his Battalion and by Sep 1915 the Battalion were doing trench duty in the Becordel – Ficourt area on the Somme Front. During the period of 3 – 21 Sep 1915 a total of 10 OR s were killed in action, William was one.

Additional Information

War gratuity of £3 10s and arrears of £1 7s £d was paid to his widow.
