Pre War
Born on 5 May 1888 in Hertford Heath son of Henry and Alice (King) Camp, of Filmer Cottage, Amwell, Ware, Herts. and baptised on 24 Jun 1888 in Little Amwell. Living in Hunsdon in 1891 and Stanstead Abbots in 1901.
Henry Camp was a policeman. After working at Bishop’s Stortford, he became the local policeman for High Wych.
He lived in Ware when he enlisted in Bishops Stortford.
Wartime Service
Enlisted at Bishops Stortford.
Being in a reserved occupation, Henry would not have been conscripted. However, in February 1917 Henry volunteered, enlisting in Bishops Stortford, and joined the Royal Horse Artillery. He served with the 15th Brigade, a part of the 29th Division.
In November 1917, this Division was giving artillery support during the Battle of Cambrai. This was the first massed tank attack, and a prelude to future warfare. It was here that on 30 November 1917 that Henry Camp was killed in action, presumably through shellfire. He has no known grave.
Henry Camp is named on the Cambrai Memorial and the High Wych Memorial Plaque. He was aged 29.
