Pre War

Thomas William Scoffin was born in 1886 in Radlett, Herts, the son of Edward and Harriett Scoffin and baptised there on 6 June 1886.


On the 1891 Census the family were living at Cobden Hill,  Radlett where his father was working as a Coachman (Domestic). By 1911 they were living in Aldenham Road, Radlett and Thomas was working as a General Labourer. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Luton, Beds initially into the Bedfordshire Regiment, under Reg. No. 26819 and later transferred to the Northamptonshire Regiment.


He was killed on the first day of the attack on Thiepval Ridge, part of the First Battle of the Somme. 

Additional Information

His mother, Mrs H Scoffin, Aldenham Road, Radlett, Hertfordshire, ordered his headstone inscription: "Gone but not forgotten".

His mother received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £2 18s 3d.
