William Elliott Calcraft was born in Camberwell, London on 23 Aug 1899 (baptised 24 Sep 1899 at St George’s, Camberwell) to William James Calcraft, bookshop manager, and Ellen Louisa (nee Elliott).

On the 1901 census the family of parents and William were living at 29, Deloerton Road, Newington, Southwark.

On the 1911 Census the family of parents, William, Rosaline (born 1901), Albert (born 1903), Dorothy (born 1905), James (born 1908 and Ivy (born 1909) were living at 79, Stephendale Road, Fulham.

He worked as an errand boy

Wartime Service

William was deemed to have been enlisted (conscripted) on 2 Mar 1916 and was called for Service on 27 Sep 1917 and posted on 29 Sep 1917 as Private 44641 to 27 Battalion Training Reserve at Clipstone Camp, Notts. From there on 20 Feb 1918 he was transferred to 52 Graduated Battalion (Bedfordshire Regiment) at Brockton, Staffs.

On 6 Apr 1918 he was posted to Infantry Base Depot (Bedfordshire Regiment), France and from there joined as Private 103364 10th (Service) Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby) Regiment a unit in 51 Brigade, 17th (Northern) Division. In 1918 they were engaged in the 2nd Battles of the Somme at Albert (21-23 Aug 1918). William was wounded on 18 Aug 1918 probably in Trench duties prior to the Battle and although moved to 29 Casualty Clearing Station he died of his wounds on 31 Aug 1918.

War Gratuity of £3 was paid to his father James and arrears of £1 5s 7d each to Rosalind & Albert, £3 16s 9d to brother James.
