Kimpton Village Memorial, St Peter & St Paul Church, Kimpton

Nathan Cain was born in Kimpton, Herts in 1893, the son of William & Charlotte Cain and one of ten children. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living at Church Lane, Kimpton, where his father was a horsekeeper on a farm, and remained there in 1911, when Nathan was recorded as a bricklayer's labourer.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Hertford and served in France from 26 July 1915 with the 7th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. They sailed from Folkestone on SS Onward and arrived in Boulogne sur Mer.


The battalion fought in the Battles of Albert and Bazentin  (part of the Battle of the Somme) in July 1916 followed by attacks on Thiepval and the Schwaben Redoubt in September. 


Nathan was killed in action on 15 November 1916 when they were in trenches near Albert. He has no known grave but his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. 

Additional Information

Brother to Roger Cain who is also named on the Kimpton Memorials. He served with the 1st Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment and was killed in action on 15 February 1915. He is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, France.


His mother received a war gratuity of £9 10s and pay owing of £7 3s 1d. His parents received a pension of 10 shillings a week for Nathan and his brother Roger.
