Pre War

Aubrey Spencer Cain was born in Flamstead, Markyate, Beds in 1896 to Harry (Henry) Cain, cattle dealer, and Eliza (nee Wardman).

On the 1901 Census the family ODF parents, Arthur C (born 1892), Olive M (born 1893), Henry L (born 1895), Aubrey S, C Ellie  (born 1898) and Thomas F (born 1900) were living at London Road, Markyate.

On the 1911 Census the family of parents, father was a farm bailiff, mother was a straw hat machinist,  Arthur (straw plait dyer), Henry L (cowman), Aubrey (ploughboy), Ellie, Thomas, Cecil, (born 1901), Percy (born 1906), Roger (born 1908) were living at 128.High Street, Markyate.

Wartime Service

No Service Record was found Spence, He originally enlisted in the Bedfordshire Regiment  as Private 3/7412 in the 3rd (Reserve) Battalion about Aug 1914. At some he was transferred to the Suffolk Regiment as 43465 and posted to 11 (Service) Battalion (Cambridgeshire).


Spencer may have fought with Suffolks in 14 (Light ) Division at the Somme in 1916 at the Battles of Delville Wood (15 Jul-3 Sep) and Flers-Courcelette (15-22 Sep). In 1917 the Division moved to take part in the Arras Offensive. During the 1st Battle of the Scarpe (9 -14 Apr 1917) Spencer was killed in action on 10 Apr 1917.


Served for 2 Years and 10 Months before his death.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £12 10s  and arrears of £6 19s 1d was paid to his mother. Brothe Harry Cain served with King’s Royal Rifle Corps and was killed in action at the Battle of Guillemont on the Somme on 3 Sep 1916.
