James Robert William was born in Tottenham, Islington in 1893 (Baptised 19 May 1893 at St Silas, Pentonville, Islington) to James Young Caiger, a compositor, and Lily Elizabeth (nee Edge).


On the 1901 James and his father were lodging with the Piercy family at 45, Oriel Road, Hackney. His mother died in 1902. His father James Young Caiger married Mary may Low in Hackney in Sep 1903.


On the 1911 Census James was lodging as a boarder with Emma Hayes at High Street, South Mimms.

Wartime Service

No Service Record was found for James. He may have enlisted late 1915/early 1916 as Private 20480 East Surrey Regiment and was posted to 1st Battalion who had been in France from Aug 1914.


In 1916 the 1st East Surrey were in Reserve but as part of 5 Division were to take part in Battles of the Somme (1916) at High Wood, Guillemont (3 Sep), Flers-Courcelette (15-22 Sep) and Morval (25-28 Sep). It was in the last engagement that James was killed in action on 25 Sep 1916.

Additional Information

War gratuity of £3 and arrears of £3 15s 8d was paid to Ada L Dockree. He is recorded as Caijer J on the Potters Bar Memorials.
