Pre War
Herbert was born in Datchworth on 10 May 1898, the son of Richard Scales and Ann (nee Carpenter). Later recorded as of Holly Bush Cottages, Datchworth, Stevenage, Herts.
In 1901 he was living with parents and known as Bert. His father was a ploughman. In 1911 he was described as "just left school". In Army records it is said he lived in Stevenage, but this is probably a misinterpretation of his address which was "Datchworth, Stevenage, Herts"
Wartime Service
Enlisted at Hitchin and is said to have served in the Royal Field Artillery as 156707 and then the Manchester Regt.
He became a Lance Corporal at 19. 21 Manchesters were involved in the attack on Broodseinde Ridge as 'moppers up' ( one company, following 22 Manchesters) on 4 Oct 1917. Later in the day the remainder of the Battalion were sent forward as reinforcements. Herbert is recorded as being killed on this day and he is reported as 'missing' on 22 Nov 1917 and presumed killed on 19 Dec 1917.
His remains were never recovered and he is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
