Pre War

Herbert Charles Byatt was born in 1897 in Bishop's Stortford to Charles and Harriett Byatt. He was living with his family at 27 Castle Street, Bishop's Stortford on the 1911 Census and on enlistment, when he was working as a Draper's Sorter.

Wartime Service

Herbert enlisted aged 17 on 10 December 1913 initially into the 1st Hertfordshire Regiment, under reg. No. 2296. He embarked from Southampton on 5 November 1914 and was appointed Lance Corporal on 29 November 1916.

He was listed as wounded and missing in August 1917 and later found to have been captured at Ypres on 31 July 1917.

His death was officially accepted as 23 December 1917 in Aachen, Germany.

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £15 10s and his father Charles received his pay owing of £22 6s 1d.
