Pre War

Son of Mary Ann (nee HOBBS) BUTTON of Watford, and the late Henry BUTTON.

His parents married 10 October 1881 at St Matthew’s, Camden, London.  Henry died 1903 in Watford aged 56, and was buried 16 July in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford; Mary died 1940 in Watford aged 79, and was buried 11 January, also in Vicarage Road Cemetery.

Henry was born 29 March 1886 in either Wood Green, Middx, or Tottenham, London, and baptised 13 June 1886 at St Michael’s, Bowes Park, Middx.  He attended Callowland Board School, Watford, from 13 March 1899 to 22 March 1900.  He resided in Watford.

On the 1891 Census, aged 5 he lived in Wood Green, with his mother and four siblings.  On the 1901 Census, a furniture shop assistant aged 15, he lived in Watford, with his parents and seven siblings.  On the 1911 Census, a builder’s labourer aged 25, he still lived in Watford, with his widowed mother and five siblings.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Watford, and was formerly Private 6278 Essex Regiment and Private 5501 Border Regiment.  He was entitled to the Victory and British War medals, and was killed in action.

Additional Information

There is a brief article about and a Death announcement for Henry in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 13 October 1917.

Has a entry in the National Roll of the Great War.

His brother Sidney died 23 April 1917 and also features on Watford Borough Roll of Honour.

Unfortunately, Henry’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
