Sidney George Saunders was born on 29 August 1899 in  Baldock, Herts, the youngest son of Edwin and Jane Saunders (nee Wren), and baptised on 15 October 1899 in Baldock. He was one of ten children.


On the 1901 Census the family were living at Park Street, Baldock, where his father was working as a brewer's drayman. His mother died in 1902 and on the 1911 Census he was living with his widowed aunt Elizabeth Richmond and uncle George Wren at Park Street, Baldock. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Hertford on 2 March 1916 but was not called up for service until 29 September 1917 and was posted to the 27th T. R. Battalion.  After training he was  posted to the 10th Battalion, Notts and Derby Regiment on 7 April 1918.


Sidney died from 'gas' wounds at the 6th General Hospital on 18 August 1918, aged 19, and is buried in St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France. 

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £4 17s 1d. Although pension cards exist in respect of Sidney and his brother Edwin, they give no indication if a pension was paid. 


Brother to Edwin Charles Saunders who served with the Bedfordshire Regiment and died in 1916.
