Born on 20 Jan 1878 in Harrow, Middlesex son of Spencer Percival and Mary (Kendall) Butler. Educated at Haileybury College 1891-93 and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. He married Winifred Emmeline Cohen on 24 Jul 1905 and they lived at 45 Connaught Street, Hyde Park, London. He had one son. Gazetted 2nd Lieutenant on 23 Dec 1897 and served in India from 1899 for nine years. Promoted Lieutenant on 23 Dec 1900, Captain 23 Jan 1905.

Wartime Service

He entered France in Sep 1914. Promoted to Major 30 Oct 1914.
