John William Bush was born in Goff’s Oak, Hertfordshire, in 1888, son of James Bush and Annie Maria Bush (nee Cooledge). One of eleven children, although three died in infancy.


Baptised at St. James Church, Goffs Oak, Herts, on 29th July 1888.


1891 Census records John aged 3, living with his parents, three brother’s, and sister Bertha (5) in, Goff’s Oak, Herts.


John started school on 4th July 1892 aged 4, at Goff’s Oak Primary School.


1901 John (12) his parents and four siblings are living in Goff’s Oak. 1911 John (22) is working as a Cowman, living with his parents, and three brothers, Arthur (20), Alfred (17), and Clarence (8), still in Goffs Oak.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Cheshunt and he embarked for the Western Front on 27th August 1916 and joined his Battalion on 9th September. 


The Battalion had suffered heavy losses in the capture of Ginchy and Lueze Wood on 9th and came out of the line to recuperate. Returning on 26th, they then took part in 3 days of fighting in the Thiepval area and The Schwaben redoubt in particular. 


He was one of 12 men killed in action or died of wounds on 28th.

Additional Information

His effects of £2-11s-07d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of £3, went to his brother Frank according to the Army Register of Soldiers Effects Register. No brother Frank was found. (Possible eldest brother George Frederick Bush). His younger brother Gunner 201688 Alfred Colin Bush of the Royal Garrison Artillery died on 24th January 1919, of Influenza.
