Alfred Colin Bush was born in Goff’s Oak, Hertfordshire, on 24th March 1894, son of James Bush and Annie Maria Bush (nee Cooledge). One of eleven children, although three died in infancy.
He was Baptised at St. James’s Church, Goff’s Oak, on 29th April 1894.
1901 Census records Alfred aged 7, living with his parents, and four siblings, George (18), John (12), Arthur (10) and Florence (8) in, Goff’s Oak, Herts.
Alfred attended St. James School and Cheshunt Dewhurst Endowed Boys School, leaving on 23rd August 1908, aged 14, to start work.
1911 Census records Alfred aged 17, working as a Labourer, living with his parents and three siblings, John (22), Arthur (20) and Clarence (8) in , Goff’s Oak.
Alfred married Louisa Harvey of Enfield, Middx, the daughter of Sibley and Annie Harvey, at St. Luke’s Church, Enfield, on 6th February 1916. They went on to have one son Eric Alfred Collingwood Bush.
Wartime Service
Alfred enlisted at Cheshunt, Herts, on 29th February 1916, giving his age as 21yrs and 11 months, employed as a Carman, living at, 61 Cedar Terrace, Brigadier Hill, Enfield, Middx.
He was posted to the Army Reserve the following day 1st March 1916. Mobilized for war service on 26th April 1916, and posted to the Royal Field Artillery, No 4. Depot, Woolwich, with the service number 124836.
On completion of his training, he embarked at Southampton on 12th September 1916, arriving at Le Havre, France the following day the 13th. His Battery was reorganised and became “16” Anti-Aircraft Battery on 27th November 1916. He was posted to “0” Anti-Aircraft Battery Royal Garrison Artillery on 11th September 1917, with the new service number 201688. He received two weeks leave to the UK from 2nd Nov to 15th Nov 1918, via Boulogne, France.
He died on 24th January 1919 at No 48. Casualty Clearing Station, Namur, Belgium, of Influenza.
Additional Information
Louisa received a widow’s pension of 20/5 a week from 4th August 1919. His effects were split between Louisa and son Eric, £7-11s-1d, to Louisa and £15-2s-00d to son Eric from his Pay Owing, his War Gratuity of £16, went to Louisa. His elder brother Private G/11201 John William Bush of the Royal Sussex Regiment, died on 28th September 1916, of wounds received in action.
