Arthur Burton was born in Bethnal Green, London in 1893, one of seven children born to Henry and Elizabeth Burton (nee Hairman). His father worked as a Boot Maker. Arthur is listed on 1911 census as Clerk, Junior, drapery.
On his attestations papers he gives his occupation as Stock keeper. In December 1915, he was living, with his Mother at 72 James Street, Bethnal Green.
Wartime Service
On 9 Dec 1915, he joined the 3rd/7th Battalion Middlesex Regiment and was given the Service Number 6250. He was later posted to the 1/7 Middlesex Regiment, arriving in France on 2 Sep 1916. On the 7 Oct 1916 He received a Gun Shot Wound to his face. In 1917, he was given a new Service Number 202247 and was promoted to Corporal.
The War Diary shows that the Battalion had just taken over part of the line at Bullecourt, (South East of Arras) which had been captured on the 29 Aug 1918, in the early hours of the 30 Aug 1918, the Germans launched a successful counter attack that drove them from the captured line.
Arthur was Killed in Action on 30 Aug 1918, Aged 24, and has no known grave and is commemorated on The Vis-en-Artois Memorial
Additional Information
Although it does not appear that Arthur ever lived in Eastwick, a form in his service record dated 4/07/19 shows his Father, Mother and two of his siblings living at Oddfellows Arms, Eastwick.
