Pre War

Born in 1895 in Spitalbrook, Hoddesdon, Herts. son of James and Louisa Samuels.

He was living in Hoddesdon in 1901 and living and working with his brother in law in 3 Western Terrace, Hailey in 1911 as a labourer. Enlisted at Hertford.

Wartime Service

Battalion arrived in France on 15 Aug 1914 and went into action at first at Mons, Le Cateau and the Retreat. Were then involved at La Marne and the Aisne. In Oct transferred by train to Bethune and into the line at La Bassee where they helped with the recapture of Givenchy on 14 to 16 Oct 1914 but with many casualties.

He died of wounds probably in hospital in Bethune.
