Pre War
George Burrows was born in 1900 in Peckham, Surrey, the son of William and Emma Eliza Burrows and one of seven children, although two had died by 1911.
On the 1901 Census he was living with his uncle Samuel Taylor Burrows, his wife and children at Peckham Villa, Ickleford. His sister Florence was also there. Samuel Burrows was living on his own means. Meanwhile, his parents and brothers William and Wallace were living at 138 High Street, Peckham, where his father was a greengrocer.
By the time of the 1911 Census when he was 11 years old, he was back with his family and living in High Street, Peckham where his father was a greengrocer.
Wartime Service
George enlisted at Bedford and joined the 3rd Battalion, Suffolk Regiment.
He died on 16 May 1918 at the Military Hospital, Felixstowe, Suffolk, aged 18 and is buried in St Katherine's churchyard, Ickleford.
Additional Information
His father received pay owing of £8 5s 0d. As there are no medals listed for this soldier and no war gratuity was admissible which suggests he had less than 6 months' service. It is possible that he became ill before being posted abroad and never saw active service. Pension records exist but give no indication if any pension was paid.
