Pre War
Born in 1892, in Hunsdon, to parents John and Kate, living in Hunsdon Street, Hunsdon, in 1901 with his father shown as being a hay and straw dealer. His mother Kate was the second wife of John Burr and the total number of children between his two marriages was 21, there were 10 boys and 11 girls. John burr was shown as a licenced victualler in 1881 but by 1891 he was a farmer, living on Olive’s farm.
In 1911 the family had moved to Downe House, Hunsdon, with his father still a hay and straw dealer and Harry was now working as a domestic gardener. Harry married Florence Eleanor Sparkes in 1913.
Wartime Service
Enlisted at Hertford on 7th April 1916 in the Royal Feld Artillery as number 1882, but was transferred and went to France in January 1917as part of the 6th Battalion, Northampton Regiment part of the 54th Brigade of the 18th (Eastern Division). His unit fought at the Somme in the battles for Trones Wood, Thiepval, Schwaben Redoubt and Regina Trench.
The brigade was then moved to the Ypres Salient where they fought at Passchendaele. Sometime during the battle, Harry was wounded as he was transferred back to England where he died at No.1 General Hospital Cambridge on 30th December 1917.
Additional Information
One of Harry's brothers, Oliver, fought in the war, in the navy, and he was lost at sea.
