Pre War

Frank Saltmarsh was born in 1894 in Berkhamsted, Herts, the son of Frank and Mary Jane Saltmarsh, and one of two children. with an older sister Florence. He was baptised on 2 May 1894 at Great Berkhamsted. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living in Doctors Common Road, Berkhamsted where his father was working as an estate carpenter. They remained living there in 1911 at which time Frank was working as a bootmaker's assistant. 

Wartime Service

Frank enlisted in Edward Street, London (2/3rd Battalion HQ) and joined the 3rd (City of London) Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. 


He served in Egypt from 19 April 1915 prior to fighting in Gallipoli.  He was initially reported as mission and later as killed in action in Gallipoli on 28 November 1915, aged 21.


He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey. 

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £4 10s and pay owing of £6 11s 6d.
