William James Saich was born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, on 18th November 1898, son of William Saich a, Nurseryman and Annie Maria Saich (nee Shambrook). One of five children.
1901 Census records William Jr. aged 2, living with his parents, sisters Amy (10), Bessie (6) and brother Thomas (4 months) at, 43 Albury Grove Road, Cheshunt, Herts.
William Jr. attended St Marys Infant’s and Dewhurst Endowed Boys School, Cheshunt, leaving in February 1913 to start work.
1911 Census, William Jr. (12) his parents, and brother Thomas (10), are now living at 18 Dewhurst Road, Cheshunt, Herts. His Great Aunt, widow Sarah Wackett (81), is living with the family.
Wartime Service
William Jr. enlisted at Mill Hill, Middx, posted to the Royal Field Artillery (R F A) with the service number 207385.
He was Killed in Action on 10th October 1918, aged 19, while serving with the 134th Battery, R F A. He is buried in the Naves Communal Century Extension, in France. Grave Ref: I. B. 17.
Additional Information
His effects of £11-17s-0d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £7-10s-0d, went to his mother Annie Saich. She ordered his headstone inscription while living at 34 Dewhurst Road, Cheshunt, it reads: "IN LOVING REMEMBRANCE GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN".
