Pre War
George William Tharby was born in on 12 April 1879 to William and Emma Tharby and baptised on 5 November 1882 at Northaw, Herts. In 1891 the family were living at Park Farm, Northaw where his father was a farm labourer.
By 1901 they had moved to Alms Yard, Northaw and George was working as a Carter. He married Jane Whitley on 30 July 1910 at Aldenham, Herts and on the 1911 Census they were living with her widowed mother and brother George Whitley at Delrow Cottage, Aldenham. George was working as a house painter and they had no children. 
Wartime Service
He signed up on 25 November 1915 into the Army Reserve & Bedfordshire Regiment but was not mobilised until 14 June 1916 and was posted to the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on 6 November 1916, serving in the 2nd Battalion Cheshire Regiment.
He died of dysentery shiga. [shigella] at the 21st stationary hospital, Salonika.
Additional Information
His widow Jane received a war gratuity of £9 and pay owing of £16 8s 7d and also received a pension of 13s 9d a week with effect from 27 January 1919.
