Pre War

.Percy George Burgess was born on 21 Jan 1895 (8aptised 8 Feb 1895 at St Mary & St Clement) in Clavering, Essex) son of George Burgess and Elizabeth (nee Davey).

On the 1901 Census the family of parents, George and Bertie Charles (born 1900) were living at Hill Green Clavering.

On the 1911 Census George was listed as a cowman and was living with his parents and Bertie at Hollow Lodge, Hoddesdon.

His parents later lived at 19 Old Highway, Rye House, Hoddesdon.  George's or his family connection to Potters Bar is yet to ascertained.

Wartime Service

No Service record was found for George. He volunteered for Territorial Service with the Hertfordshire Regiment as Private 3771 at Hertford. His service Number was issued sometime between Nov (3691) and 13 Dec (4223). He was at some time transferred to Lincolnshire Regiment as Private 235123.

Machine Gun Battalions were formed in early 1918 and absorbed surplus soldiers resulting from the reduction of Infantry Brigades from 4 to 3 Battalions. This would seem to have happened to George who became Private 139320 in 37 Battalion Machine Gun Corps, he was designated as a Driver.

He died of pneumonia in service on 22 Jul 1918.
