Pre War

William Alfred Saban was born in 1890 in Bishop's Stortford, the son of Henry and Alice Eliza Saban and baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Bishop's Stortford on 31 August 1890.

On the 1891 and 1901 Censuses, the family were living at 6 Bartholomew Road, Bishop's Stortford but had moved to 8 Thorley Terrace, Twyford Rd, Bishop's Stortford, Herts by 1911.

Before the outbreak of the war William was employed by Mr. T. Ward. Nurseryman. South Street, Bishop's Stortford.

Wartime Service

He was in the Herts Territorials at the outbreak of the war and went to France on November 5th, 1914, early enough to receive the Mons Star.

He was a time expired man, but re-enlisted in 1916.

After going through the war without a scratch he died from bronchial pneumonia on 6 November 1918 at the 18th Casualty Clearing Station in France, which was situated on the Rocquigny to Equancourt Road near Ytres at the time.

Additional Information

Brother to Robert Saban who died in May 1919 and is also named on the Bishop's Stortford memorial. A £20 war gratuity and his pay owing was split between his mother and Miss Amelia F Sharp. Pension records show his mother applied for a pension and received 11 shillings a week (combined) for her two sons William and Robert.
