Pre War

Alfred was the son of Rebekah and the late Thomas Saban, later of 1 Skeering Mill Rd., Sawbridgeworth, Herts. He was born in 1896 and was baptised in December that year. 


He was a ‘Grocer’s Errand Boy’. 

He was a resident of Sawbridgeworth when he enlisted in Hertford.

Wartime Service

Alfred was joined the 1st Battalion Hertfordshire Regiment and rose to the rank of Corporal.

Between 9-15 August 1918, the Battalion were in trenches near Bucqouy. There was no major action at this time, but Alfred Saban was mortally wounded here at some point.
 
Alfred saban died of his wounds 16 August 1918. He is buried at Bagneux British Cemetery, Gezaincourt, France. He was aged 21.

Additional Information

His headstone does not appear to have an inscription, but the CWGC records note his mother as a contact. He was a cousin of Edward Vick who also died. Note the Hertfordshire Regiment 'renumbered' their companies from letters to numbers, like the Guards regiments whom they served alongside. Some databases give his service number as 266898. Service number 266898 or possibly 266878.
