Pre War

Alfred James Burgess was born in 1898 in Berkhamsted, Herts, the son of William and Emma Burgess and one of five children, although two had died in infancy. He was baptised on 17 April 1898 at Great Berkhamsted.


On the 1901 Census the family were living at 6 Wilderness, Berkhamsted where his father was working as a carter at a nursery. They remained at the same address in 1911 at which time his father was a general labourer. 

Wartime Service

Alfred enlisted in Watford, Herts and initially joined the Bedfordshire Regiment, under reg. no. 30079,  but was later transferred to the 12th Battalion, Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex) Regiment. 


He was killed in action on 7 August 1917 during the Third Battle of Ypres, aged 19. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. 

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £4 and pay owing of £2 13s 6d. He also received a pension of 6 shillings a week. 


N.B. On the St Peters Church Memorial, Berkhamsted he is named as Pte Albert  J Burgess 12 Middx R.
