Reginald Henry Victor Burges was born in Enfield Lock, Middlesex, on 15th April 1889, son of William Muir Burges an, Armourer in the Army Ordnance Corps and Alice Sarah Burges (nee Holden).


His father William was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1856, a career soldier, who enlisted in Edinburgh, with the 93rd Highlanders. Reginald’s parents were married at St. Botolph Without Bishopsgate, in the City of London on 24th April 1884. His father died at Reading, Berks, on 3rd February 1904, aged 48, while serving as Armourer Sergeant Major, 458. William Muir Burges, of the Army Ordnance Corps, attached to the Royal Berkshire Regiment.


Reginald was Baptised at St. James Church, Enfield Highway, Middx, on 9th June 1889.


His mother Alice died in Dover, Kent, in October 1898, aged 44.


No further records were found for Reginald until the 1911 Census which records Reginald aged 22, single and an Armourer in the Army Ordnance Corps (following in his fathers’ footsteps) and stationed at the Military Barracks, Tower Hill, Freetown, Sierra Leone, West Africa.


Reginald married Violet Edith Norcott the daughter of Samuel and Ellen Norcott of Waltham Cross, Herts, in 1914, they went on to have one son Reginald Victor Burges.

Wartime Service

At the outbreak of war Reginald was a serving soldier with the Army Ordnance Corps. Seeing service on the Wester Front.


Armourer Staff Sergeant A/1169 Reginald Henry Victor Burges died of Pneumonia at No. 1 Stationary Hospital, Rouen, France, on 17th October 1918, at the time of his death he was attached to 1st Battalion, Norfolk Regiment.

Additional Information

His widow Violet of 21 Eleanor Road, Waltham Cross, Herts, received a widow’s pension of 24/2 a week from 28th April 1919. His effects were split between Violet and son Reginald, Pay Owing £10-00s-10d to Violet and £21-01s-07d, to Reginald. His War Gratuity £9-16s-8d to Violet and £19-13s-4d to Reginald. His Headstone inscription “AT REST IN PEACE” was requested by his widow Violet Edith Burges.
