Wartime Service
He enlisted on 5 Nov 1914 in St Albans into the Army Veterinary Corps (Territorials) as Private 89.
On 1 Dec 1916 he was transferred from the Territorial AVC to the Regular, although not clear on the 'burnt' records it was likely to be for better pay as when he is transferred to the East Surreys he remains on AVC rates of pay.
On 15 Dec 1917 he was compulsorily transferred to the East Surrey Regiment and became Private 204747.
He was posted missing presumed dead 27 Mar 1918, during the German offensive along the Somme Front, the 'Kaiserschlacht' The Kings Battle.
Records uncovered in Berlin post war found that he had been taken to the German reserve Hospital 28 at Ham, where he died on 16 Apr 1918. He was initially buried in the German Cemetery at Ham
