Frederick Charles Bundy was born in 1883, in Goodworth Clatford, Hampshire, son of William Charles Bundy, a Dairyman and Louisa Bundy (nee Gartery). He was one of twelve children two died in infancy.


He was baptised on 20 August 1883, in the Parish Church, Goodworth Clatford, Hampshire.


1891 Census records Frederick aged 8, living with his parents, and six siblings at, Manor Farm Dairy, Station Road, Nursling, Hampshire.


1901 Census records Frederick aged 17, working as a Cowman on a Farm, living with his parents, five brothers and two sisters at, New Cottages, Eastdean, Sussex.


Frederick married Mary Upton, the daughter of George and Elizabeth Upton, of Hurstpierpoint, on 17 October 1908, in the Parish Church of Hurstpierpoint, Sussex.


They went on to have four children, Edith Mary, born in, 1909, in Hurstpierpoint, Frederick George born in 1911, Dorothy May born in 1913, both birth registered in Reigate, Surrey, and Alfred Edward, born in 1915, his birth was registered in Watford, Herts.  


1911 Census records Frederick aged 28, Married to Mary with one daughter Edith Mary (2), living at Dowde’s Cottages, Buckland Green, Surrey. His occupation is given as a Milkman on a Farm. 


It is not known when the family moved to Borehamwood, Herts.

Wartime Service

Frederick enlisted at Bedford. Posted to the Bedfordshire Regiment with the service number 22580. Serving on the Western Front, he was Killed in Action on the 16 November 1916, during heavy shelling while entrenched near Waggon Road, Beaumont Hamel, France.


At the time of his death he was with “C” Company, 6th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. (Information found on Red Cross missing person enquiry form). 

Additional Information

Mary received a widows pension of 28/9, a week from 16 July 1917, his effects of £2-15s-9d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of £4-10s-00d. His widow, Mrs. M. Bundy, 46, Malden Road, Boreham Wood, Herts., ordered his headstone inscription: "REST IN PEACE".
