Pre War

Born in 1891 in Rickmansworth Walter was the son of William and Annie (nee Davey)Bundell. William was a Gardener and they lived in Rickmansworth High Street. William died in 1903.

The 1911 census has Walter age 31, a Dairyman’s Assistant, with his mother, still in the High Street, and two siblings, Ellen age 24, and Frederick age 20, a Coal Merchant’s Clerk, who died in hospital on the 7th of November 1918 while a prisoner of war in Poland. In 1917 Annie was living at 72 Talbot Road.

He is recorded as enlisting in Bedford.

Wartime Service

Walter was killed in action at the Battle of the Menin Road on the 20th of September 1917. Late in the day the Battalion’s right flank was exposed to machine gun and sniper fire due to the adjoining unit not having achieved its objectives.

Battalion casualties(killed and wounded) during the action were approximately 13 officers and 100 other ranks.

Brother of Lance Corporal Frederick Luke Bundell who died as a prisoner of war in Poland on 7 Nov 1918. Listed in CWGC and SDITGW as Bundle.
