Pre War

 John Elliott was born on 3 Sep 1888 North Finchley, London as the eldest son to John Howard Terry, a commission merchant dealing with Australia, and Lucy Caroline (nee Elliott).


He was educated at Aldenham School and Sherborne School where he was active in Rugby and Shooting. John became a commercial clerk (in his Father’s business). On 20 Jan 1914.


He married Phyllis Mary Stockings at All Saints, Margaret Street, Marylebone giving his address as Margaret Street, Marylebone.  There would be a son, John Ernest Christopher Terry born in 1917.  Between 1914 and 1916 He carried on business, for his father, in Australia from 1914 to 1916 when he returned home.

Wartime Service

John joined the Royal Flying Corps on 7 Oct 1916 as 2nd Lieutenant, giving his address as 7 Great Winchester Street, E.C. London. He was appointed Equipment Officer on 6 Dec 1916.


His commission was confirmed in 27 Dec 1916 and he went to France on 14 Feb 1917. He died in No.2 Red Cross Hospital Rouen on 16 Oct 1917 as the result of Cellulitis (blood poisoning) and is buried in St Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France.

His widow was granted Probate of £294 9s 1d.
