Percy Arthur William Bullimore was born in Islington on 6 November 1899, the eldest son of (Mark) William and Ruth Bullimore (nee Brown), and baptised at Emmanuel Church, Hornsey Road, Islington, London on 10 December 1899.
On the 1901 Census Percy and his mother were recorded as visitors at the home of his grandparents, George and Hannah Brown, in Back Street, Ashwell, Herts. By 1911 the family were living at 42 Grafton Road, Holloway, London where his father was working as a cellarman for a wine and spirit dealer.
Percy was admitted to Cottenham Road School, Holloway in 1903 and his address was given as 25 Fortnam Road. He later won a scholarship to Clarks College and was a pupil at Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell. He then entered the Civil Service where it was thought he had a substantial career ahead of him.
On pension records his parents' address was given as Silver Street, Ashwell and they later lived at Kingsland Terrace, Ashwell.
Wartime Service
Percy enlisted in Hertford on 7 December 1917 and joined the Queen's Own (Royal West Kent) Regiment, serving with the 1st Battalion in France.
He was killed in action on 23 August 1918, two months before his 19th birthday. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, Arras, France.
A notice relating to his death appeared in the Hertfordshire Express on 21st September 1918.
Additional Information
His mother received a war gratuity of £5 and pay owing of £2 1s 6d. She also received a pension of £5 shillings a week.
