Pre War
Harry
was born in 1872 in Bishop's Stortford to George and Ann Bull. In 1881 he was living
at the Royal Oak Beer House, Bishop's Stortford with his widowed mother who was the
Beer House Keeper. His deceased father had previously been a beer seller. By 1891
they had moved to Buckhurst Hill, Essex. He married Elizabeth Blanks on 2 June
1895 at St Thomas, West Ham, Essex. On the 1911 Census Henry and Elizabeth were
living at Albert Road, Buckhurst Hill where Henry was working as a
labourer. Unfortunately, all their 6 children had died.
Wartime Service
He enlisted
at Warley in Essex and served in the Essex Regiment. He died of broncho pneumonia at No. 37 Casualty Clearing
Station, France which was situated at Avesnes, near Arras, in April 1917.
Additional Information
Widow Elizabeth received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £1 4s 9d. She was also granted a pension of 15 shillings a week from 15 October 1917.
Date discrepancy between CWGC and SDITGW, 3rd or 8th April.
Pension records suggest 3.4.1917 is correct.
