Pre War
Edgar Arthur Rumbell was born in Barley, Hertfordshire, in 1889, son of Walter Rumbell a Domestic Gardener and Susan Elizabeth Rumbell (nee Machon). One of three son although one died in infancy.
1891 Census records Edgar aged 1, living with his parents, at The Mount, Cambridge Road, Barley, Herts.
Edgar attended Barkway C of E Junior School, Barkway and Dewhurst Endowed Boys School, Cheshunt.
1901 Census, Edgar (11), is living with his Grandfather John Rumbell at The Mount, Barley, Herts. His parents and brother Harry George (9) are living at Newsells Farm, Barkway, Herts.
1911 Census, Edgar (21), is working as a Nurseryman, living with his parents at, 2 Kent Cottages, Brookfield Lande, Cheshunt, Herts. His Cousin Walter George Webb (23) a Grocers Assistant was living with the family.
In late 1911, Edgar married Nellie Clayden of Waltham Cross, Herts, the daughter of George and Isabella Clayton, they went on to have two children Walter Arthur Cecil born 1912 and Eileen May born 1914.
Wartime Service
Edgar enlisted at Bedford, posted to the East Surrey Regiment with the service number 33657. He initially served with the 4th Battalion, later posted to the 9th Battalion.
Seeing action on the Western Front, he was Killed in Action on 9th September 1917, during the Third Battle of Ypres. He is buried in Larch Wood (Railway Cutting) Cemetery in Belgium.
Additional Information
Nellie received a widow’s pension of £1- 2s-11d, a week from 25th March 1918, and his effects of £1-15s-5d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £3.
