Pre War

Edward Budd was born in Tring in 1897 to Edward Budd, labourer, and Emily (nee Smith).


On the 1891 Census the family of Edward, Emily and Minnie (born 1891 were living at Zealand Place, Chapel Street, Tring.


On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Minnie, Louisa, Edward and Edith were living at 8, Linhope Street, Marylebone, London.


On the 1911 Census the family of parents, Minnie & Louisa (domestic servants) Edward (assistant ?), Albert (born 1902), Frank (born 1905) and Dorothy (born 1911) were still living at 8, Linhope Street, Dorset Square, Marylebone.

Wartime Service

Edward enlisted in the Bedfordshire Regiment as Private 19518 in the 3rd or 4th Reserve Battalion and would be in training at Landguard, Felixstowe..


1st Garrison Battalion of the Essex Regiment was formed in Jul 1915 from various troops on duty in the coastal ports of East Anglia (they would all be transferred into the Essex Regiment), and sailed from Davenport arriving at Mudros in the Gallipoli Sector on 3 Sep 1915. They were employed on mixed duties including handling stores on both Suvla , Anzac and Cape Helles beaches.


Edward died 21 Dec 1915 and is buried in Portrianos Cemetery, Mudros, an Aegean Island off Gallipoli.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £3 and arrears of £2 9s 6d was paid to his mother Emily.  No marriage record was found for Edward, his mother is recorded as Next of Kin on his Pension Record Card  receiving a pension of 29s 6d.
