Pre War
John David Buckwell was born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, in 1889, son of John Thomas Buckwell and Celia Buckwell (nee Brazier). One of seven children.
1891 Census records John aged 1, living with his parents, sister’s Hatie (6) and Elsie (4) in Windmill Lane, Cheshunt, Herts.
1901 Census records John aged 11, living with his parents and five siblings at, 2, Carterhatch Lane, Enfield, Middx.
In May 1907 John enlisted for six years in the “Kent Royal Garrison Artillery Militia” with the service number 8163. He gave his age as 17 yrs. & 10 mons, employed as a Farm Labourer and lived at, 2 Romney Cottages, Carterhatch Lane, Enfield, Middx.
On 13th August 1907, John applied to join the regular army, and joined the Royal Field Artillery (RFA) with the service number 46641. No 1911 Census record was found.
Wartime Service
At the outbreak of war John was still serving with the RFA. He arrived in France on 28th August 1914, seeing action on the Western Front.
In April 1918, John received a gun shot wound and was admitted to 53rd General Hospital, Wimereux, France, on 13th April, he died of his wounds at the 32nd Stationary Hospital Wimereux, France on 24th April 1918. He is buried in the Wimereux Communal Cemetery in France.
Additional Information
His mother Celia received a dependents pension of 5/- a week from 6th November 1918. His effects of £28-7s-00, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of £17-10s-00d, went to his father John.
