Arthur Charles Burchmore was born in 1883 in Markyate (baptised on 13 Aug 1886) to Thomas Burchmore, straw hat blocker, and Anne Gilson (nee Timms/Abbott).
On the 1891 Census the family of Parents, Henry (born1877), Thomas) born 1877), Alice (born 1879), Kate (born 1882), Arthur, Ernest (born 1886) were living at Hicks Lane, Markyate. There were two older Brothers Robert (born 1874 and Richard George (born 1874).
On the 1901 Census Arthur was living at 24a, Oak Lane, Cricklewood with his Brother Richard, a railway stoker, and his family of wife Edith, Henry, Kathleen, and Leonard.
On the 1911 Census was still living with his brother Richard G and his family of Rosa (wife), Leonard and Richard.
Arthur married Mary Elizabeth Shepherd on 6 may 1911 at Cricklewood Congregational Church, Chichele Road, Cricklewood.
Wartime Service
No Service Record was found for Arthur, he probably was called for on 1916 and opted to enlist as a Territorial Private 4959 in 1st/8th Battalion of Duke of Cambridge’s Own (Middlesex Regimen).
Following his training he may have been transferred to 21st (Service) Battalion (Islington and became Private G/41044. At some time he was promoted to Lance Corporal.The 21st Battalion were to land in France in June 1916 and took part in the Battle Ancre (13-18 Nov 1916) in the Battles of the Somme. In 1917 they took part in The Advance to the Hindenburg Line (March) and the capture of Fifteen Ravine, Villers Plouich, Beaucamp and La Vacquerie (April and early May). During these latter actions Arthur was reported killed in action on the 10 April 1917.
His remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme.
Additional Information
War Gratuity of £3 and Arrears of £2 18s 5d was paid to his widow.
