Pre War
Cecil Charles Ruder was born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, in the later part of 1893, son of Nathan Henry Ruder a, Foundry Labourer at the Royal Small Arms Factory, Enfield, and Alice Ruder (nee Wood). One of five children although two died in infancy.
Cecil was Baptised in the Parish of Waltham Cross, Herts, on 21st January 1894.
1901 Census records Cecil aged 7, at School, living with his parents, and brother Robert (12) at, 3 Albert Road, Cheshunt, Herts. The family had a boarder Richard Worthy.
1911 Census, Cecil (17), is working as a Milk Carrier, living with his parents, brother Robert (22) and sister Alice (9) at, 144 Eleanor Cross Road, Waltham Cross, Herts.
His mother Alice Ruder died in late 1914, aged 53.
Wartime Service
On 6th September 1914, Cecil enlisted at Ponders End, Middx, for 7 years with the Colours and 5 years with the Reserves, in the 10th (Prince of Wales Own Royal) Hussars and issued with the service number 19692. He gave his age as 20 yrs. & 10 mons, and his occupation a Milkman. Joining the 10th Hussars at the Regiment Depot at Scarborough, Yorks, on 8th September 1914.
His service record shows he served at home until 15th July 1915, arrived in France on 16th July 1915. He was an unpaid Lc/Corporal from February 1915, until May 1915, when he was appointed paid Lc/Corporal. He was transferred to the 1st Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment on 2nd June 1915, with the service number 18636.
He was Killed in Action on 22nd August 1915, he has no known grave, and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial in Belgium, to the missing.
Additional Information
His father Nathan H. Ruder, received his effects of £3-5s-2d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £5.
