Born on 13 Aug 1876 in Aldenham, Hertfordshire son of Charles Duncan and Ada Charlotte Francis Royds later of Brize's Park, Brentwood, Essex.
Educated at Haileybury College 1890-94. Enlisted Private 84 on 1 Apr 1908 in the 28th London Regiment, appointed C/Sergeant on 11 Mar 1913. He was an artist.
Wartime Service
John entered France on 26 Oct 1914 and was appointed Company Sergeant Major on 21 Mar 1915 He obtained his commission as 2nd Lieutenant on 17 Nov 1915 and was killed in action.
