Arthur Cyril was born in 1894 (baptised 25 Feb 1894) in Wheathampstead to Arthur Bruton, a housepainter, and Emily (nee Archer).


On the 1901 Census the family consisting of parents, elder brother George Henry (born 1892), sister Dorothy May (born 1897) and Robert Bernard (born 1900) were living at Wheathampstead Hill. On the 1911 the family were living at New Marford, Wheathampstead. George was working as a railway porter, Arthur was a motor washer, Dorothy was a dressmaker’s apprentice while Robert was at school.

Wartime Service

Arthur volunteered in Sep 1914, he enlisted in the Hertfordshire Regiment (a Territorial regiment) as Private 3038.


He went to France on 23 Jan 1915 in a draft of 2 Officers and 195 Other Ranks to join the 1st Battalion at Givenchy. Arthur was posted to 4th Company and soon experienced front line conditions. His Battalion were part of the 4th (Guards) Brigade 2nd Division and fought with them in actions at Cuinchy, Festubert. In the Battle of Loos (Oct 1915) Arthur is reported to have died of wounds on 3 Oct 1915.  

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £3 10s and arrears of £3 0s 10d was paid to his mother. Brother Robert served in Northants Regt as private 58422 from 1918 being demobilised in Dec 1919 and died in 1922.
