Pre War
Frederick John was born in 1899 (baptised 6 Aug 1899 in Rolvenden, Smallhythe, Tenterden) to John Brunger, a shepherd, and Emma Jane (nee Ladd). On the 1901 Census Frederick was living with his parents, Alfred (born 1890), Charlie (born (1891), Annie (born 1893) and Albert (born 1898) at Cole, Tenterden, Kent. There was also an elder sister Mabel Rosa (born 1888). On the 1911 Census Frederick, at school, was living at Cole Farm, Smallhythe, Kent with his parents, Alfred and Charlie (both Domestic gardeners), Albert (assisting his father as a shepherd on the farm).
There is little evidence of Frederick’s connection with Frogmore or St Albans, other than his enlistment in Watford.
Wartime Service
No Service Record was found for Frederick. He was originally enlisted in the Training Reserve as Private TR/10/88782, E. Surrey Regt. He was posted to the Grenadier Guards as Guardsman 31711 (Guards Service Records are retained by the Regiments, his service number was probably issued in Apr 1918. He went to France to join 3rd Battalion, Grenadier Guards in France and took part in the Battle of Sambre (4 Nov 1918) in which he was killed in action.
Additional Information
War Gratuity of £6 10s and arrears of £4 2s 11d was paid to his father John. Brother Alfred served with Royal East Kent Yeomanry as Private 2860 from 14 May 1915, going to France 21 Sep 1916 & transferring on 16 Feb 1917 to Buffs (Royal East Kent Regiment) as Private 13788 and was demobilised on 7 Jul 1919. Brother Charles James served as Private 92125 with Notts & Derby (Sherwood Foresters) Regiment and survived the Great War. Brother Albert Edward servied with as Private 1880 with 2/4 Battalion Royal West Kent Regiment and 36548 with East Surrey Regiment going to France on 20 Sep 1915 and survived the Great War.
